Education is a powerful tool that greatly reduces the chances of inmates returning to the prison system. In most cases it is the lack of education that got them there in the first place. Education is our best hope for reuniting families and creating a law abiding, productive re-entry into society. We provide free books and resource guides to prisoners nationwide. It’s our way of contributing to a safer place for our children and a more stable home life for children of prisoners being released.
In 2004, the US Dept. of
Education determined that more than half of the adults in American prisons have
less than an 8th grade education.About 2000 inmates are released from prison
every day. Half of them do not have the educational skill that they need to
succeed in legitimate employment. An astounding 2/3 of all inmates released are re-arrested.
As of 2011, over $80 billion is spent each year (DOJ) to
support corrections. Prison education programs account for about 1% of our
Federal and State correctional budgets.
