DOES SENDING "NO MIND" BOOKS REALLY SERVE A PURPOSE? Definitely. For some, they provide a mental escape and for many they serve as a catalyst to indulge and become proficient in reading skills; an opportunity that did not exist for them on "the outside". To address the needs of those inmates who are ready to move on in their personal development, Providence Books Through Bars has instituted an IMPACT program. This is where our true strength lies. More information can be viewed HERE. WHAT KIND OF BOOKS DO YOU NEED? The #1 requested book is a dictionary! Many prisoners are teaching themselves to read or teaching others. We always need English dictionaries, thesauruses and Spanish/English dictionaries. Mostly, we prefer soft-covers.. Hardcover books are expensive to ship and most prisons do not accept them. We are eager to accept just about any gently used book EXCEPT Romance Novels (we already have too many!) Some of the most popular are: Art (especially instructional) Best sellers (And popular authors like James Patterson, Stephen King and Dean Koontz.) Biographies & Autobiographies Black/African (History, Culture, and Novels) Business & Computer (recent!) Crafts & Do-it-Yourself guides Fantasy & Sci-Fi Games (Especially D&D, Chess, Crosswords, and Puzzles) Gardening & Horticulture History (Especially African-American, American Wars & Ancient) Meditation & Yoga Mysteries, Thrillers & Suspense Novels Mythology (Especially Norse, Roman & Greek) Native American & Mexican/Mayan (History, culture and Novels) New Age, Wicca & Supernatural Science (Especially Astrology, Biology & General) Spanish (Instructional and books printed in Spanish) Sports (Especially Magazines) Westerns (We get many requests from Texas) CAN YOU USE MAGAZINES? By all means. The most popular is National Geographic but there is no limit to the kinds of magazines requested (can't use the "girly" ones though!) They must not be tattered and if they have mailing labels we generally block them out or cut them off. WHAT ABOUT CHILDREN'S BOOKS,TEXTBOOKS, CD'S & DVDS? Yes, all of the above (in good condition). We donate Children's' Books to other prison related projects and also send packages to youth detention centers (teens). Actually, we are pleased to accept monetary donations for that purpose as well. Textbooks must be current and not full of notes or scribbling. CAN I GET A TAX DEDUCTION RECEIPT? Yes, just CONTACT US (We are a 501(c)3 non-profit group.) IS THERE A BOOK-DROP BIN? DO YOU EVER PICK UP BOOKS? Yes and yes! Our book-drop bin is on the front porch of our headquarters at 42 Lenox Ave. in Providence. The "contact" page has a map.
